Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is a scheme developed jointly in co-operation between industry and government, which awards certification against a basic but essential level of cyber hygiene and is suitable for organisations of any size, in any sector. Cyber Essentials defines a focused set of controls which will provide a cost effective demonstration of an organisations commitment to cyber security. Cyber Essentials can be achieved at 2 levels, Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus.

The scheme considers 5 key controls, the correct implementation of these controls will assist any organisation in defending against the most common forms of cyber-attack, using widely accessible toolsets and low levels of attacker skill, emanating from the internet.

Increasingly, Cyber Essentials certification is becoming a pre-requisite of conducting business. As of 1 January 2016, all suppliers bidding for MoD contracts, where there is an exchange of information, must demonstrate that they are compliant with the Cyber Essentials scheme. The Defence Cyber Protection Partnership (DCPP) is responsible for protecting the defence supply chain and has developed a Cyber Security Model (CSM) in co-operation with industry. The CSM recommends that all defence suppliers should achieve Cyber Essentials compliance as a minimum.
